There's not a massive section dedicated to the solo albums of Brazilian keyboard players in my music collection, but if there was, this one from acclaimed ivory-tinkler Mauricio Pedrosa would certainly sit near the top.
Why? Because 'Hard Rock Summit - Devotion and Surrender', his fifth solo release, is a fantastically trippy journey through some of the finest blues infused rock numbers you will ever come to hear. So, never mind Joe Bonamassa, here's Mauricio Bossanova!
We're graced with nine glorious instrumentals that will have you kicking back with a cold beer and piece of mind in no time at all. Opener 'Mairipop City' sets the pace for an album that sets the bar high and maintains it throughout. 'Tetris' follows next, piecing together a flawless musical experiment with guitar work so elegant it reminds me in places of Dire Straits.
Yet in other places, 'The Canyon' for instance, I feel a warm, seventies era, Fleetwood Mac air. We're even treated to some high class harmonica along the way, its addition blowing a lusciously smokey vibe deep into the heart of the jazz club groove. It's a thoroughly enjoyable exercise and the approach to the music clearly comes straight from the heart.
'Hard Games' a personal favourite for me, a real highlight of this 'Hard Rock Summit...' and one of four tracks that feature the exquisite guitar talents of Misconducters band leader, Den. A guy more accustomed to thrashing out punk edged metal, he switches seamlessly to this amazing style that shows just how wide and versatile his musical tastes and talents are. Truly superb stuff.
Through it all Mauricio provides a solid backbone to each of the tunes, injecting flourishes of bouncing notes that jump like crazed fleas from key to key. A style that will have him noted as something of a South American Ray Manzarek, just listen to 'Railroad Boogie' for evidence of that. But Mauricio ain't no one trick pony and his styles fluctuate from track to track keeping the whole thing fresh. 'Devotion', for example, has echoes of Ken Hensley's finest 'Sunrise' moments. I love that and I seriously recommend checking it out.
It's damn near perfect!

Por qué? Porque'Hard Rock Summit - Devotion and Surrender', su quinto disco en solitario, es un viaje fantástico y tripulado a través de algunos de los mejores números de blues infundidos en el rock que jamás hayas escuchado. Así que, no importa Joe Bonamassa, ¡aquí está Mauricio Bossanova!
Estamos agraciados con nueve instrumentos gloriosos que te harán relajarte con una cerveza fría y tranquilidad en un abrir y cerrar de ojos. El'Mairipop City' marca el ritmo de un álbum que pone el listón muy alto y lo mantiene en todo momento. A continuación sigue'Tetris', armando un experimento musical impecable con un trabajo de guitarra tan elegante que me recuerda a los lugares de Dire Straits.
Sin embargo, en otros lugares, por ejemplo en'The Canyon', siento una cálida era de los setenta, Fleetwood Mac air. Incluso nos deleitamos con una armónica de alta calidad a lo largo del camino, su adición que hace vibrar el corazón del ritmo del club de jazz con una deliciosa vibración ahumada. Es un ejercicio muy agradable y el acercamiento a la música viene claramente del corazón.
Hard Games' un favorito personal para mí, un verdadero punto culminante de esta'Hard Rock Summit....' y uno de los cuatro temas que presentan los exquisitos talentos de guitarra del líder de la banda Misconducters, Den. Un tipo más acostumbrado a golpear el metal punk, cambia sin problemas a este estilo asombroso que muestra cuán amplios y versátiles son sus gustos y talentos musicales. Un material realmente magnífico.
A través de todo esto Mauricio proporciona una sólida columna vertebral a cada una de las melodías, inyectando florituras de notas rebotantes que saltan como pulgas locas de tecla en tecla. Un estilo que lo hará destacar como una especie de Ray Manzarek sudamericano, sólo hay que escuchar a'Railroad Boogie' como prueba de ello. Pero Mauricio no es un poni con trucos y sus estilos fluctúan de pista en pista para mantenerlo todo fresco. Devotion', por ejemplo, tiene ecos de los mejores momentos de Ken Hensley 'Sunrise'. Me encanta eso y te recomiendo seriamente que lo compruebes.
