The Mastersounds • Ballads & Blues

Review by Scott Yanow
For a few years in the late 1950s, the Mastersounds were a popular band. Consisting of vibraphonist Buddy Montgomery, electric bassist Monk Montgomery, pianist Richie Crabtree and drummer Benny Barth, the group was essentially an easy-listening and less classical-oriented version of the Modern Jazz Quartet. On this out-of-print LP, the band performs a "Blues Medley" (which includes among its three songs numbers by Milt Jackson and John Lewis), three originals, "Solar," "How Deep is the Ocean," "Mint Julep," and Dizzy Gillespie's "The Champ." The music is quite accessible, if now difficult to find.

 Artist Biography by Scott Yanow
Vibraphonist Buddy Montgomery and electric bassist Monk Montgomery (1921-1982) came together to form the Mastersounds (a melodic and easy listening bop group) with pianist Richie Crabtree and drummer Benny Barth in 1957. The band caught on for a few years, cutting ten records in four years for Pacific Jazz, World Pacific, and Fantasy. Wes Montgomery appeared on one of their 1958 albums, a set of songs from the play Kismet. After the group disbanded in 1961, they had a brief reunion in 1965. The two Montgomery brothers had numerous opportunities to play with their more famous sibling under Wes' leadership throughout the 1960s.
