Larry Goldings • Intimacy Of The Blues (With David Newman)

Review by Scott Yanow
This well-rounded set was the first one on which Larry Goldings (formerly known as a pianist) exclusively played organ. His trio with Peter Bernstein (a fine bop guitarist) and drummer Bill Stewart (best known for his association with John Scofield) is tight in the Jimmy Smith tradition, although Goldings also displays his own musical personality. Veteran tenor saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman helps out on "Skylark" and "The Intimacy of the Blues." Other highlights include Goldings' memorable original "Pegasus," "Jive Coffee" (based on "Tea for Two"), a faster than usual version of "Wouldn't It Be Loverly," and a swinging "When Johnny Comes Marching Home."

El veterano saxofonista tenor David "Fathead" Newman ayuda en "Skylark" y "The Intimacy of the Blues". Otros aspectos destacados incluyen el memorable "Pegasus", "Jive Coffee" de Goldings (basado en "Tea for Two"), una versión más rápida de lo habitual de "Wouldn't It Be Loverly", y el columpio "When Johnny Comes Marching Home".
