Clifton Chenier • Zydeco Dynamite, The Clifton Chenier Anthology

Clifton Chenier was an American zydeco accordionist, singer and harmonica player, born in Opelousas, Louisiana, on June 25, 1925, and died in Lafayette on December 12, 1987.
The success of zydeco is due, in large part, to the work of Chenier, whose repertoire was filled with blues, waltzes, rock, two-steps.... His control over the accordion was complete, brimming with swing and, when singing, he mixed English and French, in the Acadian tradition, with his powerful, husky voice.
Chenier also introduced a major departure from the Cajun tradition, replacing the simple German diatonic button accordion with four keys in C with the modern chromatic piano accordion, which allowed him to play blue notes.2 He also established a predominant line in the development of zydeco, both commercial and respected, which marked the next two decades and earned him the nickname King of Zydeco.
