Eldee Young & Red Holt • Feature Spot

Album Review:
For more than ten years Eldee Young and Red Holt were very important elements of the Ramsey Lewis Trio. Eldee's strong bass playing and good-humored cello improvisations added a special lilt to the trio's sound and Red Holt's performance on drums provided a solid, groovy rhythmic base.
Because of the superb artistry of Young and Holt. they frequently had the solo spotlight, both in the live performances of the group and in recording sessions. Eldee got more solo exposure in the studios because of the melodic capability of his instruments, but in the clubs Red took many extended drum solos that because of his technical skill and fine sense of showmanship were high spots in the group's performances.
Equally adroit on both the bass fiddle and the cello, Eldee contributed many exciting musical moments during his stay with the original trio. He has a strong feeling for the blues and a keenly developed sense of swing, and his performances won high praise from professional musicians as well as the non-musical fan.
Both of these men have an infectious, good-natured approach to music and their presence on a bandstand or at a recording session always makes for lively proceedings. Much of this good humor and excellent musicianship has been captured in these record grooves.
